The Wilderness of Creativity Podcast: Episode 102, I Met a Psychic in a Hospice Residence Once …

Today is the release of a podcast I recorded a few weeks ago with Lucy Colgan of The Wilderness of Creativity Podcast. I reached out to Lucy because I wanted to speak with her, which is unusual for me. But the heart and depth of her curiosity and the way her work runs parallel to mine was inspiring to me and I wanted to record a conversation where we explored death and grief as creative processes. Thankfully, she obliged.

Our conversation was everything I’d hoped it would be. Lucy is thoughtful and engaging. From the very beginning of the recording, she kept me challenged but comfortable. We started with Lucy drawing a card when I said to as she shuffled a deck; for our conversation, the card was the helper. And what a appropriate path into the work that I do as a death doula and how it overlaps with the wildnessness of creativity.

In this episode, we talk about how to become a death doula, what the works actually looks like, and what I’ve learned walking with others “through the wilderness”. As we talk about spirituality and the interconnectedness of us all, I tell Lucy a story about the conversation I had with a psychic medium inside a residential hospice and what she sees as people go through that last stage of life. We talk about how literature and storytelling are essential pathways into death awareness and mortality work and finally, we discuss how living gains brilliance and clarity when done so connected to our own death, not the opposite that is often expected.
