What Does a Death Doula Do in Nashville?
Navigating the end of life can feel overwhelming for both the person who is dying and their loved ones. That’s where a death doula comes in. At Farewell Fellowship, we provide compassionate, non-medical support for individuals and families across Nashville and Middle Tennessee, helping make this profound transition as meaningful as possible. We also teach our community about death and grief, to normalize and humanize these essential parts of the life cycle. There are 5 key pillars of the work of death doulas in Nashville:
1. Emotional and Practical Support
A death doula’s role is deeply human. We provide emotional presence, guidance, and comfort for both the person nearing the end of life and their loved ones. Some of the ways we help include:
Holding space for conversations about death and dying
Offering guidance around rituals, legacy work, and life review
Supporting family members in caregiving tasks and decision-making
Assisting with planning for the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the dying
Connecting families with trusted resources and care providers.
Every family’s needs are different, and our support is tailored to your situation. This can look a lot of different ways. For example, some Nashville families need weekly check-in’s with their death doula to designate time to prepare for the transition ahead. Others are overwhelmed by the decision of when to enroll in hospice and which one to choose. Some families seek assistance in care team planning and others need more support than what hospice provides (95% of care at end of life is provided by loved ones). Almost every family that Jade works with asks for some kind of direction on after death wishes as well, from family led home funerals, to natural burial resources, to choosing the best cremation or burial option.
2. Advocacy and Education
Death doulas often serve as advocates, helping families navigate the complex healthcare environment. We explain options, clarify what hospice or palliative care offers, and empower families to make informed decisions.
We also provide education for those interested in learning how to be a death doula, through hands-on mentorship and virtual learning. This is part of our mission to grow a compassionate community of trained doulas who can serve families throughout Nashville and beyond. Death literacy is how we define building fluency in all things end-of-life. Many of the education events Jade hosts are intended to build community death literacy as well as for individuals and families.
3. Presence at the Bedside
One of the most essential roles of a death doula is simply being present. This presence offers reassurance, helps ease anxiety, and ensures the dying person and their loved ones feel supported, seen, and respected.
Whether it’s sitting quietly, reading, meditating, or facilitating meaningful conversations, a death doula is there to help make the transition gentle and intentional.
4. Creating Meaningful Rituals
Rituals can be an important part of the dying process; helping families process grief and honor their loved one’s life. A death doula can guide families in:
Preparing meaningful ceremonies or bedside rituals
Supporting spiritual or cultural traditions
Helping families commemorate legacies and memories
These rituals create lasting comfort and help families navigate grief in a healthy, intentional way.
5. Supporting Aspiring Death Doulas
At Farewell Fellowship, we also train the next generation of death doulas. Through mentorship and immersive learning experiences, we help individuals develop the skills, presence, and confidence needed to support families in Nashville and across Middle Tennessee. We believe that death doula work is a sacred lineage best taught by being passed down practitioner to practitioner. To preserve the integrity of this sacred form of community care, we teach in apprenticeship style, building relationships and community as we teach and share resources.
Why Families Choose a Death Doula in Nashville
Many families don’t realize the value of having a death doula until they experience the difference firsthand. Having someone who guides, teaches, comforts, and witnesses the end-of-life process can relieve stress, reduce fear, and create a more meaningful, peaceful experience for everyone involved.
If you or a loved one are facing the end of life in Nashville, a death doula from Farewell Fellowship can provide compassionate, hands-on support and help families navigate this transition with presence and dignity.
