Death Doula 101

Are you being called to become a death midwife or end of life doula? Not sure where to start? This virtual workshop is offered every other month & is a 60-minute presentation where Jade presents an information packed primer on the work of death doulas.

We discuss what exactly a death doula/midwife/end-of-life doula is and does and the difference between the titles. We talk about certification and training programs and Jade recommends 6 different programs and explains precisely what to consider when choosing the best fit for you. Jade also gives lots of resources: what to read, who to follow, where to start exploring and connecting, and the first few steps in discerning this path into holistic death work.

Following the 60-minute presentation is a 30-mn Q & A to get your specific questions answered. You’ll also receive an information packet full of resources to keep.

This is a live workshop and if you book but are unable to attend, you will be offered a spot in the next worship (every other month) or a digital recording to view on your own with a 15-minute virtual meeting to ask any questions.

As always, there is one spot available for free. If you’re experiencing financial hardship, please reach out for a coupon code to join us.

From Goodreads: “In her stunning debut, the creator of Black Liturgies weaves stories from three generations of her family alongside contemplative reflections to discover the "necessary rituals" that connect us with our belonging, dignity, and liberation.

At once a compelling spiritual meditation, a powerful intergenerational account, and a tender coming-of-age narrative, This Here Flesh speaks potently to anyone who suspects that our stories might have something to say to us.”

Advance Care Planning Workshop: a Journey Through the 5 Wishes

This small-group virtual workshop is designed as an introductory advance care planning session in an intimate group. You will download or print the 5 Wishes advance directive from fivewishes.org. We will meet virtually and walk through each of the 5 wishes for end of life care, thoroughly exploring what precisely you are recording. Jade will give real-life examples and explain (in detail) what the language means (e.g. what exactly does CPR involve? Can you request only parts of CPR?). Through each of the wishes, the group will have opportunities to clarify language, ask questions and bounce ideas off one another while separately (and privately) recording your own wishes for your self.

Additionally, the 5 Wishes are a wonderful basic template. Jade will guide you through additions to the Five Wishes to further detail your care plan by adding things an experienced Death Midwife would include. At the completion of this workshop, you will have your own advance directives complete with a vigil plan outlined, legacy project explained and after-death wishes recorded. This directive can be witnessed or notarized to make it legally binding, as required by your state (Jade will explain that for each participant too).

This group is capped at 4 participants so we can have an honest and intimate conversation to make a daunting project less overwhelming. Jade will also provide some tips for discussing your care plan with your loved ones and a discount is offered for private additional sessions, if you need more individualized assistance. The Farewell Library Virtual Book Club

✨Read with us! ✨

Join the Farewell Library’s Virtual Book Club on Tuesday, January 31 @ 7 pm CT to discuss Sasha Sagan’s “For Small Creatures Such As We: Rituals for Finding Meaning in Our Unlikely World”.

From Goodreads: “Sasha Sagan was raised by secular parents, the astronomer Carl Sagan and the writer and producer Ann Druyan. They taught her that the natural world and vast cosmos are full of profound beauty, that science reveals truths more wondrous than any myth or fable. When Sagan herself became a mother, she began her own hunt for the natural phenomena behind our most treasured occasions—from births to deaths, holidays to weddings, anniversaries, and more—growing these roots into a new set of rituals for her young daughter that honor the joy and significance of each experience without relying on religious framework.”

Part autobiography, part memoir, part self-help, part social science, this brave little book guides us to create and celebrate rituals as key to a meaningful life.

The Story Collectors - Hospice Edition

Narinder Elizabeth Bazen & I are death midwives who share an interest in witnessing and collecting stories from tender death and dying spaces. We appreciate the importance of stories.

As the death midwifery stories have accumulated in our hearts over the past few years, we have noticed that oftentimes our community is missing a place to share their death and dying stories. Recently, we noticed that there is not a communal space to share 'hospice stories' and so we'd like to start our Story Collectors events there.

We invite you to join us in a sacred event of community witnessing - the hospice edition.

This is a place to share your stories of hospice; the good, the bad, and the ugly, and the stories with a little bit of each.

We understand the power in storytelling and invite you to find whatever it is you need through telling your hospice story. You are welcome here.

The space is limited to 15 people at this time. It is our intention to keep the event intimate. This is a free offering to support our communities.

We are looking forward to listening to your stories. Book your spot on the guest list here.

The Farewell Library Virtual Book Club

From the publisher’s description:

“Growing up in Alabama, Margaret Renkl was a devoted reader, an explorer of riverbeds and red-dirt roads, and a fiercely loved daughter. Here, in brief essays, she traces a tender and honest portrait of her complicated parents—her exuberant, creative mother; her steady, supportive father—and of the bittersweet moments that accompany a child’s transition to caregiver.

And here, braided into the overall narrative, Renkl offers observations on the world surrounding her suburban Nashville home. Ringing with rapture and heartache, these essays convey the dignity of bluebirds and rat snakes, monarch butterflies and native bees. As these two threads haunt and harmonize with each other, Renkl suggests that there is astonishment to be found in common things: in what seems ordinary, in what we all share. For in both worlds—the natural one and our own—“the shadow side of love is always loss, and grief is only love’s own twin.”
